Uncle Tom's Cabin is the novel attributed with starting the Civil War. This story by Harriet Beecher Stowe tells the tales of Uncle Tom, and the alternate story of the Harries family. When slaves Uncle Tom and 5-year-old Harry Harris are sold, Eliza Harris flees with her son, but Tom remains. Eliza and Harry soon escape into Ohio, but the Fugitive Slave Act has been passed, so they are still being hunted. The only way to truly become free is to escape into Canada without being caught! Before Tom is taken away by slave trader Haley, his masters the Shelby's (who merely sold him to pay off a debt), promise to find him and buy him back some day. After being taken from his home, Tom is sold to another man, Augustine St. Clare, in order to please Eva St. Clare, Augustine's daughter. But soon, Uncle Tom is once again sold, this time to the cruel slave-holder Simon Legree. Can Eliza and Harry make it to Canada? Will Tom live long enough to be rescued? You'll have to read to find out.
